Be wary of plain-clothed “police officers” in the country as travelers may encounter from time to time a plain-clothed local who claims to be a police officer.  While most of these may be the real deal and just performing their duties, there might be some who are just pretending and using it as a ruse to catch people off guard to relieve them of their possessions.  If you come across someone claiming to be a police officer who wants you to go with them for some reason, explain in a respectful but firm way that you prefer going to the police station on foot and do not hand over important documents.
