Don’t Expect A Comfortable Personal Space

Personal space has a different meaning in Peru, or it doesn’t exist altogether, as locals tend to stand really close to you when you’re speaking with them so don’t expect them to be beyond arm’s length.  The situation might be uncomfortable for you, but this is perfectly normal to them.  Moving away from them might just cause offense, in the event that they don’t move in closer as you step away.  Treat this as part of the whole Peruvian experience when interacting with the locals, and take this as one of the ways they demonstrate their warmth or friendliness, even to strangers.
