Don’t think you can just jump in the trail and march on to Machu Picchu with ease.  First of all, you need to have a registered guide with you before you even start.  The popular hike, which gives you lush green forest alive with birds, Andean peaks and steep mountain passes, is filled with old ruins, and is accessible only to those that undertake this famous hike.  It takes at least four days, but majority of the path is steep and narrow and even if you think you are fit enough to tackle the path, there is still the altitude and the weather to consider, so plan well.
