Don’t Think The Guinea Pig Is A Pet

When you think of guinea pigs, what comes to mind are those cute and furry pets that are highly sociable companions that love to interact with people.  But in Peru, don’t think that the guinea pig, or cuy, is a pet, as it is actually eaten here and considered a delicacy.  It is normally reserved for special occasions, but because of the growing popularity of this “exotic” food, particularly with tourists, it has become a part of the menu in a lot of restaurants.  So, don’t be surprised if you see large numbers of these furry creatures in households as they are not meant to be pets, but are raised as food.
