While it’s more probable to hear locals speaking English when they work or reside at or near tourist spots or attractions, the same cannot be said for the rest of the country so it would be best to learn some basic Spanish to help you communicate better when needed.  You will find out to your liking that the effort to learn their language is much appreciated.  Saying buenos dias for good morning, buenas tardes for good afternoon, and buenas noches for good night are simple ways to warm up to them.  In fact, Peruvian Spanish is considered easier to understand compared to the Spanish of other countries.
