Smart and very independent, no amount of training will completely rid them of their natural hunting instincts. They will pursue animal smells, so better keep them on a leash. They are one of the oldest terrier breeds, and are recognized as one of Scotland’s earliest working dogs. They are named such because they were used to hunt and chase quarry between the cairns in the Scottish highlands. They are intelligent and very active. Some bark a lot, and some love to dig. They are fierce and protective, and will naturally kill any rodents it sees. They can also be quite feisty with other dogs and cats. Also very possessive of their food and toys.
