Highly intelligent, but this massive breed needs to be well trained with sufficient mental stimulation. Otherwise they get bored and can be a bit destructive because they are so powerful. They are also very perceptive and have an acute awareness of their surroundings. Great guard dogs definitely. They love to be put to work, be it guard duty, herding, service dogs, police dogs, or therapy dogs. They are devoted and loyal companions. They may look fierce and intimidating, but can be very gentle and loving.
