Perhaps five to seven years ago, the Common Core Standards killed cursive. Mostly because they believed that learning to use technology should take precedence. They noticed that more and more of student communications and adult communications are via technology — and that knowing how to use technology to communicate and write was critical for students. In our day, cursive or penmanship classes may not have been a special favorite for any of us, but something about using cursive on a daily basis meant you were an adult.
