Falling on the Actual Ground

STM World

If you weren’t the kid who broke a bone from falling off the monkey bars, chances are you probably knew a kid who did. This was normal when we were in school, as the jungle gyms and monkey bars were usually situated on top of hard concrete or blacktop. If you were lucky, you got dirt, grass, or concrete sand to fall on — which could still result in a nasty bruise and having the wind knocked out of you. Kids today have a much softer place to land — poured rubber, turf, rubber mats or tiles, wood chips, and shredded rubber are now required under playground equipment these days, so your kid doesn’t have to spend several months of fifth grade with their arm in a cast.
