School Safety Patrol

Junior safety patrol is a voluntary group of crossing guards that had older students helping their younger counterparts safely cross the streets in elementary and middle schools across the US. The official School Safety Patrol program was organized in 1920 by the American Automobile Association. Former safety patrol members include US Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, a Nobel Prize-winning economist Dr. Gary S. Becker, US Senator John Warner, former Michigan Governor William Milliken, baseball Hall of Famer Joe Garagiola, former Chairman of the Chrysler Corporation Lee Iacocca, Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, and 21 astronauts. While that appears to be very good company to keep, only a few schools today have a Junior Safety Patrol program, with school districts generally turning to hiring adult crossing guards who can have authority over the children as well as the traffic. Kind of takes the civic duty aspect out of the whole program for us, but as long as kids are safe, we’re cool with it.
