Get Candy as A Reward

Meredith Corp

This is a rather recent development, and its enforcement seems a bit intense, but your kid now cannot get candy in school as a reward if it is a tax-funded school. A landmark case involving a PreK-8 teacher who would give her students “wrapped candy” as a reward for their hard work and good behavior was said to have violated the federal rules championed by then-First Lady Michelle Obama and may be subject to a monetary penalty. When news of that spread, students and parents raised money to help pay the potential fine on the teacher’s behalf. When the administrators decided that the violation was not a deliberate attempt to break the rules, they required the school to develop a corrective action plan to include training on child nutrition policies. By participating in the National School Lunch Program, the school district must adhere to edicts handed down from Washington D.C., and failure to uphold those rules may result in the school being required to return federal school lunch money, be penalized for state and federal food service programs, or make all the schools in the county vulnerable to similar punishment.
