Ashtray Art

Nebula

Even if your parents didn’t smoke, you probably had an aunt or an uncle who did. Or a grandmother, grandfather, neighbor, teacher — you catch our drift. Smoking was much more prevalent in the culture in those days, and it wasn’t so much about promoting smoking amongst kids but giving them art projects that were useful and easy enough to give them more confidence. Some people fondly recall how they were supposed to make ashtrays out of clay for their parents for Christmas, and it was always nerve-wracking because they weren’t sure of their artistic abilities. However, their parents would open their presents, usually the same present every year, and look like they had just been given a misshapen lump of pure gold. That, in our book, was way more important than anything else having to do with art projects.
