Walk or Bike to School

Do you remember those old clichés your parents used to dish out whenever you didn’t feel like doing something? “In my day, we had to walk five miles to school, in the snow, and we still got straight As!” — did it motivate you? Yeah, us either, but we walked to school for most of our lives, nevertheless. Parents of kids these days listed safety as their major concern when it came to their kids walking to school. A piddling 13% of all school children in American walked to school in 2004, compared to more than 50% in 1969. Ranked in terms of concern, parents are most worried about the speed and volume of traffic students encounter on their way to school, the possibility of crime, and the weather. Hopefully city planners and law enforcement with take these concerns under advisement, as it will greatly benefit kids if they walked or cycled to school — possibly even affecting the obesity rate of the country in a positive way.
