Ed O’Neill stars as Grump-pa Jay Pritchett, the hard-nosed patriarch of the extended Pritchett family. As a veteran of the Vietnam war, he brings a strict and disciplined attitude to his work and home—until he’s thwarted by his rival in the closet business, tested by his children (both adults and minors), or driven mad by his ex-wife who strangles his young Colombian spouse. Jay struggles to be emotionally open with others, particularly with Mitchell, his gay son who was trapped in the closet for years (pun intended), and with Phil whom Jay feels stole his only daughter from him. Even though he’s also tough on his stepson, Manny, he reached out and comforted the teenager when his girlfriend broke up with him.

Long before Modern Family, O’Neill played Al Bundy, the protagonist of the American TV show, Married… with Children, which was also aired in Brazil and Colombia, both dubbed and with subtitles. Interestingly, O’Neill ends up in a TV show married to a Colombian who’s trying to master English. O’Neill was also introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and after training for 22 years, he received his black belt which he considers the greatest achievement of his life, apart from his children.
