Jesse Tyler Ferguson provides a modern take on gay marriage as Mitchell Vincent Pritchett. Mitchell is Jay’s son, Claire’s younger brother, and Cameron’s long-time partner whom he marries in Season 5. The exact opposite of Cam, Mitchell is an extremely high-strung person with obsessive-compulsive behavior, especially in raising Lily, their adopted daughter. Unlike Cam who’s melodramatic even in the mildest arguments, Mitchell prefers to stay professional and not confrontational. He’s also keen for his father to recognize him as a serious and competent lawyer and not just his gay son.

Just like his character who had to come out to Jay multiple times, Ferguson also had to tell his father three times, noting it was a coming out process for his dad as well and it required time to digest. Before Modern Family, Ferguson worked in theater, starring in Shakespeare in the Park’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and on TV, in the short-lived sitcom, The Class.
