Ty Burrell stars as Phil Dunphy, Claire’s laidback husband who completely adores her, and the devoted father to their three children. He applies a parenting method called “peerenting” where he talks like a peer but acts like a parent. Phil is often shown as naïve and clumsy, trying to be the “cool dad” so his kids will consider him a buddy or doing everything to get Jay’s, his father-in-law, approval. He’s a real estate agent who takes his job seriously—as seriously as he takes magic, but he also has an alter ego, Clive Bixby, who appears whenever he’s wooing his wife.

Before Modern Family, Burrell played football in high school, worked as a bartender, and decided to live in a van to save money. He made his TV debut in an episode of Law & Order and had a small role in the war movie, Black Hawk Down. He also starred in Zach Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead and portrayed Dr. Leonard Samson in the 2008 film, The Incredible Hulk.
