Sarah Hyland does an incredible job portraying Haley Dunphy, Phil and Claire’s sassy, conceited, irresponsible, yet hilarious eldest daughter. She’s young and pretty, and she shares much of her mother’s personality when Claire was in her rebellious teenage phase. Haley is frequently shown as somewhat ditzy, often taking a while to get a joke, and is ridiculed for it by her mother and her sister, Alex, but this becomes a catalyst in a very moving scene in an episode where she admits she’s aware of her stupidity and is deeply hurt by her family’s mockery.

Hyland comes from a family of doctors; her parents and brother have worked on films, TV shows, and even on Broadway. Before Modern Family, she starred as Howard Stern’s daughter in the biopic, Private Parts, was on TV films, and also performed on Broadway.

Hyland was born with kidney dysplasia and received a kidney transplant from her father in 2012. Sadly, that kidney failed, and she had another kidney transplant from her younger brother in 2017.
