Ariel Winter plays Alex Dunphy, Claire and Phil’s extremely bookish middle child. Even though she’s one of the youngest in the extended family, she’s arguably the most intelligent, often intimidating her well-read cousin, Manny, and her gay uncles, Mitch and Cam. She’s a sarcastic and condescending overachiever, but she often feels like the oddball in her family that’s easily amused and not burdened by anxiety (except for Claire). Despite feeling out of place, her grandfather, Jay, tells her that one day, when he’s no longer around, she’ll be the one to lead the family and keep everyone in check.

Winter went through puberty on national television, being only 11 when she was cast. She was always accompanied on set by her mother who was verbally abusive about her weight and performance, up to the point that producers wanted her banned from the set.

Before Modern Family, Winter appeared in several TV shows, including Listen Up!, Freddie, Monk, Bones, and ER. She also voiced a character in the animated children’s show, Phineas and Ferb.
