Julie Bowen plays Claire Dunphy, a somewhat neurotic homemaker keeping it together while raising three kids with Phil, her goofy yet loving husband. She’s Jay’s only daughter and Mitchell’s older sister who gets carried away at times when she tries to prove herself to her father or when she competes with and bullies her younger brother. She and Phil have two teenage daughters, one who can’t survive without her phone and the other without her textbooks, and an adolescent son who has a propensity to hurt himself.

Bowen was heavily pregnant with her twin sons when she auditioned for Modern Family, and she didn’t expect to get the role. She did, and she was almost nine months pregnant in the pilot episode. The production crew effectively covered her baby bump with clothes, laundry baskets, and cereal boxes.

Before Modern Family, Bowen acted in college plays and musicals, starred as Adam Sandler’s love interest in Happy Gilmore, and was part of primetime series like ER, Ed, and Boston Legal.
