The GM EV1

Since we just mentioned it as a problem GM had to deal with, here is its story. This odd-looking electric car was supposed to be a marvel of engineering. It complied with California’s zero-emissions vehicle mandate. It held out the promise that electric cars, charged by wind or solar, could replace the smelly internal combustion vehicle. But battery technology at the time was not yet ready to replace the piston-powered engine. And it was a tiny, two-seater, light but not a powerful car, which Americans really weren’t into. It may have damaged the image of electric cars for several years. It was expensive to build, so GM had to terminate the project. GM repossessed almost all the EV1’s, and had them crushed into scrap. While they did advance EV technology, GM became known as the company that “killed the electric car.”
