Ford had quite a few lemons dating back to the Ford Model T, but that may be because they produced a lot of cars. The Edsel was an overpriced, fuel thirsty car that came out at the wrong time, at the outset of the late 50s recession. The vertical grill did not sit well with critics either. Ford’s marketing team made the Edsel appear to be the ultra-modern, wondercar of the times. But the public saw it differently. Eventually, Ford president Robert McNamara convinced the board to bail out on the Edsel project. It just was not worth the trouble.
