Ford Pinto

It was not particularly a bad car, as long as you don’t get rear-ended. It tended to erupt in flames in rear-end collisions if the gas tank was ruptured. It became notorious as it had its own page in The American Museum of Tort Law due to a 1981 lawsuit brought against Ford. The lawsuit, one of several dozen, uncovered how the company rushed the production of the Pinto. The court eventually ruled that Ford had knowingly endangered the lives of thousands of Pinto owners. Ford engineers have considered numerous solutions to the gas tank problem, but no protective devices were eventually used. The Pinto was rushed through production in just 25 months, to compete with Volkswagen and Japanese imports. But the company ended up recalling millions of these “bombs”. Goes to show that you just should not rush things, particularly if it could be potentially dangerous.
