AMC Gremlin

The Gremlin was AMC’s attempt to beat Ford and GM in the subcompact class. To save time and money, the design team basically chopped off the rear of the AMC Hornet. The result was the Gremlin, one of the most curiously proportioned cars ever. It had a long hood and front overhang, and a truncated tail, like a lizard’s tail that snapped off. The Gremlin was cheap, but an awful drive. It had a heavy 6-cylinder motor, and a choppy handling due to the loss of suspension travel at the back. While it was quicker than other subcompacts, it was also quicker to find itself at the repair shop, and eventually junk shop.
