The crack in German engineering, that is, before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Maybe Communist East Germany doesn’t count as part of the highly respected German engineering, you decide. The Trabant was their “peoples car”, an alternative to the VW Beetle. But it was way off. At higher speeds, body panels (made of fibreglass) would fall off, though powered by an 18hp motor, it wasn’t built for speed anyway. It was noisy and was a pollution menace. It also surprisingly, lacked brake lights and turn signals. While many East Germans drove these cars over the wall when it was torn down, they decided to junk them and buy a better vehicle. This and the Hugo say quite a few things about Communist manufactured vehicles. But nobody living under Commuist rule then could actually say anything.
