Ok, just to set the record straight, Milk Bars, or “bar mleczny” as they are known in the local tongue, aren’t places to order milk. It is perfectly understandable however, why you would assume they would, In truth, these establishments are actually cafeteria-style restaurants that serve delicious, freshly-cooked local dishes that are no different from what their mom’s would probably be making at home.
These milk bars are enduring remnants of Poland’s past, when the government used to run them in order to provide affordable meals for the less-fortunate members of the Polish work force. Today, they are still very much alive and are great places to sample Poland’s mouth-watering cuisine without putting a dent on your wallet.
For as little as US $1.50-$2.30, one can get a hot, satisfying meal in one of these popular eateries, though ordering can be quite challenging if you aren’t familiar with the local language.
Best advice: practice your miming skills by playing Charades. Or maybe you can just try learning a little Polish while you’re there.
