Though the initial estimate for the animals that have killed were placed at just half a billion, according to experts and ecologists from the University of Sydney, that would be a very conservative estimate, as the figures only take into account, particularly for New South Wales, the birds, reptiles, and mammals, but excludes bats. Meanwhile, the wildlife conservation group WWF in Australia has place the number to about 1.25 billion. The figures also don’t include frogs and insects, which are critical for ecosystem function. They may be small, but they’re impact on building and structuring the ecosystem is huge.
