October officially ushered in the country’s annual bushfire season, with the prolonged drought making it easier for the embers of the fires to spread, which led to more fires. Even with summer still several weeks away, around 40 fires were already burning across New South Wales, destroying or badly damaging almost 30 homes in the northern area. This was a not a surprise to fire agencies and meteorologists, as the record-breaking heat and overall conditions were expected to cause a rise in bushfire risk, with more bushland burned as of this month that the past two seasons combined.
