The numbers are staggering, with over 130 bushfires at some point wreaking havoc on the country, burning around 18 million acres of land across six states, which when combined is larger than Belgium and Denmark combined. At least 29 people have died nationwide, including another firefighter whose truck was flipped by a fire tornado while battling a blaze near his hometown of Holbrook. In New South Wales alone, over 3,000 homes have been lost or damaged, while smoke has enveloped other cities like Sydney and Melbourne. Depending on estimates, over a billion wildlife has been lost, wiping out livestock and further threatening endangered species.
