It looks like a scene from a science-fiction movie, with blood-red skies hovering over the land as people flee to the shoreline for safety. By the end of December, the fires have claimed at least 16 lives, including the firefighters from Sydney, which apparently hastened the return of Prime Minister Scott Morrison to the country, who was on holiday in Hawaii. The government has been highly criticized for its climate change policies and for its response to the crisis, fueling public protests around the country. Although the PM has issued a public apology for his absence, he was still called names by residents who felt he abandoned them, and was even refused a handshake by a firefighter.
