There is a fire season each year during Australia’s summer, as the hot and dry weather makes it easy for the fires to start and spread. The country, particularly the eastern part, has been suffering through a drought that actually began a few years earlier in 2017 that caused its driest spring ever. This has continued through 2019, with the country’s weather bureau predicting more months of drought even as the fires began to spark in September, which is earlier than usual for the country’s yearly wildfire season. Everyone was expecting this year’s season to be ferocious, but how destructive it will be can only be imagined.
