Some animals may not have been burned alive, but they are so heavily burned or wounded that they are beyond help or medical care, and the only option is euthanasia. Others which may have escaped unscathed are still facing death as the environment they rely on for food and shelter has been destroyed. Those that can be saved are treated in veterinary hospitals like the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, but there are also scenes where animals are being buried. An estimated 8,000 of the iconic koalas have perished, with volunteers searching for more injured animals. These koalas may have Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, for example, but there are several other species that are being decimated with no help or refuge.
