Lightning strikes are responsible for igniting the blazes in the drought-affected forests like those in the East Gippsland region of Victoria, but even as some people have paid the ultimate price while thousands more are risking their lives to fight the crisis, there are those who just want to see the world burn. At least two dozen people out of almost 200 charged with bushfire-related offenses have been arrested and charged with deliberately starting fires. This includes around 40 juveniles, with a 15-year-old girl and 14-year-old girl among those accused of starting a fire that has added to the chaos. Other offenses include not complying with the state’s fire ban as well as those who are facing legal action for throwing a lit cigarette or match on land.
