The Caramelized Glaciers Of New Zealand

Source: https://i.guim.co.uk

With the smoke from the incessant fires being blown across territories even outside of the continent, snow and glaciers in the Southern Alps of New Zealand have turned brown or caramel, with possible grave effects. This has raised fears that the dust could possibly accelerate the melting of the glaciers as it obscures the whiteness of the snow and ice, which helps reflect the sun’s heat and slows the melting. Although the higher glaciers could get more snowfall in the coming months, experts say the lower ones might not be able to, at least until March. It is said that areas that won’t be covered by snowfall will possibly turn pink if the algae begins to grow.
