Fighting the fires from the sky may seem to put some distance between those flying in and the wildfires, but it is no less dangerous. With wildfires devastating the two most-populated states in the country, military ships and aircraft were deployed as residents of a coastal town had their homes destroyed and were forced to flee to the shoreline for safety. The seaside town of Mallacoota was blanketed by smoke, stranding residents and vacationers alike wherever they can find shelter. Gas stations and surf clubs were turned to evacuation areas with the Navy ships and aircraft bringing in supplies like water, food, and fuel. More homes would have been burned had the wind not changed direction.
