Knight is the founder of shoe giant Nike. After 52 years in the company, he finally retired in June 2016. He ran at the track at the University of Oregon, and created Nike with his former track coach Bill Bowerman. In 1964, they each put up $500 to start a company then called Blue Ribbon Sports. Nike’s 2018 revenues were over $36.4 billion, with 73,100 offices in 52 countries. Before he co-founded Nike, he was selling Japanese running shoes from the trunk of his car. He has pledged over $500 million in donations to both the University of Oregon, and Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, his alma maters. Another rag to riches story. His story also shows that sports have more to offer than just being a professional athlete…in terms of the payout.
