They Used Communal Bar Towels

Boredom Files

Probably one of the more gross practices in the Wild West was the use of communal bar towels. Men spent the day on their horses and their nights in the bars and saloons. And since most men fashioned beards and mustaches, the majority would end up with beer-staches as well. In order to help deal with this, saloons would provide towels around the bar for the men to use to wipe the beer foam off their faces. And considering that almost every man spent his evening in the bar, who knows just how many faces shared the same towel in a night, or possibly, in a week or more!
