Another sickness that ran wild throughout the cowboy towns were STDs. With all the brothels, women and alcohol all around, venereal disease was yet another disgusting example of a lack of personal hygiene that ran wild. Obviously, no one was practicing safe sex at the time, and no one knew what a venereal disease was in the first place. Given that a number of saloon girls and cowboys were always getting busy, there was no way that STDs could be wiped out. Eventually as time went by, they all soon learned that penicillin would become their very best friend.
