Most women think about sunbathing and getting some color when they’re out in the sun, but for the women of the old west, there was no such thing as a vacation. Although the norm was to keep themselves as white as possible, they spent so much time laboring out in the sun that they didn’t always have a choice in the matter. They also understood that they played very key roles in society, which is why they eventually learned to change their beauty standards to adapt to a more common cowboy way of life, so to speak.
