Considering there were communal bar towels, can you imagine just how filthy are the men’s beards were from food, drink, and who knows what else? Given just how dirty they would get, they’d end up becoming full of germs and lice, which forced many of them to trim their beards off just to keep them cleaner. They may have cut their face hair way shorter, but it didn’t mean that they were actually all that immaculate. You’d think that they would just use the soap-weed or whiskey-shampoo to actually wash their faces?
