If they had germs growing in their beards, can you imagine the kind of other germs and infections that permeated everything else? Since bathing was an afterthought, most cowboys would end up with fungus in every covered crevice on their bodies, including their armpits, crotches, and butt cracks. And given that it was fungus, it was also extremely itchy! Add to that the immense heat and dust that came with living as cowboys do, it was a perfect recipe for disaster.
