Known as “rescue dogs” for alpine rescues, Saint Bernards are normally gentle giants. These large dogs can weigh up to 260 pounds and can reach a height of 35 inches at the shoulder. They, however, can be stubborn and can become aggressive if not socialized properly. Although they are often very affectionate, a bite force of 556 PSI can pose a dangerous concern if Saint Bernards are not trained and socialized as puppies. With their massive size, they can put children at risk simply by jumping on them. Saint Bernards need extensive exposure to people and different environments for them to overcome possible shyness, suspiciousness, or aggression.
