SeaWorld Orlando trainer Dawn Brancheau was tragically killed when she was attacked by Tilikum, a trained killer whale, during a “Dine with Shamu” performance on February 24, 2010. To the horror of the audience, the 12,300-lb orca yanked Brancheau by her ponytail and pulled her down to the bottom of the pool. The killer whale, captured from the wild when it was about two years old, was reported by witnesses to have the trainer by her waist underwater, and by that time, the pool had turned to red.
