In September 9, 2019, during the Kotte Perahera parade in Sri Lanka, an annual event that dates back to the 1400s to honor the Sacred Relic of the tooth of the Buddha, an elephant used in the parade went berserk, injuring at least 17 parade-goers. Adorned in festival regalia and electric string lights, the huge animal ran through the crowd, kicking, trampling, and knocking people off their feet with its trunk, as its rider scrambled to get off its back. Fortunately, no one was killed.
