Pierre Cleveland, 33, from Detroit, was charged with murder when his three pit bulls escaped from his yard and mauled Emma Hernandez while she was riding her bike with her brother in their Southwest Detroit neighborhood. It was alleged that Cleveland left his dogs alone in his backyard, which had a damaged fence, knowing how dangerous they are. The dogs apparently got out and chanced upon the 9-year old in an alley where they attacked her. Emma sustained bites all over her body and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
