A polar bear attack on a remote Norwegian island in the Arctic circle led to the death of Horatio Chapple, 17 years old, with four others injured. Chapple, who was on an expedition organized by the British Schools Exploring Society, was attacked in their camp shelter by a 250-kg polar bear that somehow got through the camp’s tripwire without raising an alarm. The aggressive animal, which was reported to have been starving, was shot dead by one of the group’s leaders, but not before taking the life of Horatio.
