This is a photo of a little boy named Werfel, hugging a pair of new shoes given to him by the American Red Cross. Werfel was an orphan in Austria at the time of the Second World War. Strangely, not a lot of information is published about the German children who were maimed or killed by the Allied bombing of their homes. While posters of missing children were put up all over Germany and Austria, there were approximately 53,000 orphans created by the war and displaced by the onslaught. Many roamed the countryside, living where they could find shelter. Long-term physical, emotional, and mental effects of war are severe on everybody who has lived through conflict.
