This is a photo of Joe Masseria after being gunned down, holding a bloody ace of spades. Joe Masseria was the Boss of Bosses, or the capo de tutti capi, during the 1920’s prohibition, a heyday for the spread of organized crime. Masseria, his bodyguards, and Lucky Luciano all met at a seafood restaurant at 3pm on 15 April 1931, one that Masseria visited often. Luciano excused himself from the card game they were playing, and went to the bathroom. This was the signal for the hitmen to come in. Over twenty shots were fired from from .32 and .38 caliber pistols, four of which went straight into Masseria’s back. One bullet got him in the head.
