This is a photo of communist leader Vladimir Lenin in a wheelchair after suffering three strokes over the course of just two years. In 1918, Lenin had survived an assasination attempt but was badly wounded in the process, heavily affecting his overall health. In March 1922, he was prescribed rest for his fatigue and headaches before suffering the first of three strokes in May 1922. Later that year, he suffered his second stroke in December and withdrew from active politics. In March of the succeeding year, his health was dealt another severe blow when he suffered the third and final stroke, which took away his ability to speak. He was mute and bed-ridden until his death at Gorki settlement, but officially remained as the leader of the Communist Party. More than 900,000 mourners viewed his body in the Hall of Columns.
