Wilder Man

Blogspot

This is a photo of what is believed by many to be a Siberian bear hunting suit from the 1800s. There is currently one suit in The Menil Collection in Houston, Texas, and the owners call it the Wildman Suit. It is part of an exhibit called “Witnesses to a Surrealist Vision” that contains artifacts and artwork from the collections of surrealist artists. It is a similar concept to a seventeenth century “Cabinet of Curiosities”, also known as a wunderkammer. These wunderkammer displayed artifacts from all over the world, and surrealist wunderkammers usually disregarded the historical context of the item and instead relied on visual puns to craft their exhibits. The culture of origin and original purpose of the suit is uncertain, but it is thought to have originated in eighteenth or nineteenth century Germany or Switzerland, representing a folk figure seen in the Vogel Gryff Festival in Basel.
