Meet the Alien

This is a photo of Bolaji Badejo in his Alien costume for the 1978 film by Ridley Scott. Badejo was a design student in London at the time he was spotted by casting agent Peter Archer, having a drink in a West End pub. Badejo, originally from Lagos, Nigeria, was 7 feet and 2 inches tall, with the sort of slender frame that Scott was looking for. To prepare for the film, Badejo took tai chi, consulted extensively with Scott regarding his performance, and tirelessly rehearsed the Alien’s gliding movement and mantis-like posture on set for approximately four months straight. He and H.R. Giger were the only ones allowed to watch the rushes of the Alien footage with Scott, so they could work out problems of movement and realism of action that the Alien became incredibly well-known for.
